There is proof that human intervention can stem the tide of AIDS. Even in Africa, where the odds are stacked against a large proportion of the population, we can see the tremendous impact that educational efforts are having.

One of the best examples is Uganda. Just a decade ago, this country in south eastern Africa had one of the highest incident rates in the world. But today, thanks to the efforts of volunteers working with the local health community, its rate of HIV spread is among the lowest in Africa, even when several countries around it are struggling to keep up with their own infection rates.
